Fuel Poverty Awareness Day in the UK

Socks on a radiator.

To mark the occasion, a few sobering statistics.

  • One-quarter of households in England headed by parents aged 16-24 years live in fuel poverty; this affects 3.8 million children.

  • 1.14 million older people in England live in fuel poverty; in the winter 2014/15, some 31000 ‘excess winter deaths’ were reported in England and Wales, most occurring people aged 75 and over.

  • Households living in rental accommodations have the highest rates of fuel poverty, reflecting poor upkeep by landlords.

  • In the two lowest income 'deciles' - i.e. the 20% of people in the UK with the lowest incomes - up to 40% of people live in fuel poverty.
